Cardiac Bucs win another OT thriller
After winning last week in OT Kellen Winslow thought it was so fun he'd
do it again. "I was telling Riddick 'miss it right....miss it right'".
Missing it right is exactly what happened. With roughly 5 seconds
remaining on the clock the Bucs attempted what would have been a
(roughly) 57 yarder for the win. They had the distance but
unfortunately just pressed "A" a little too early and missed right. "I
just wanted to win the toss" said owner of the Bucs Chris James. "Just
like last week. I feel like if we win it surely we can mare the ball 40
or 50 yards and get us in range." That is exactly what happened. In
the overtime session the Bucs converted a key 3rd down play to Kellen
Winslow to keep the dream (drive) alive. They would manage to get the
ball to the 39 on another key out pass to Winslow on 3rd down. With 4th
and long looming the Bucs opted to go for a long FG again and would not
be denied. Riddick squeeked by a 56 yarder to secure the win.
But how did the rest of the game fare?
The first quarter was sort of a boring slugfest. Almost as if two
heavyweights beating on one another. The Bucs would score the games
first points on their opening drive but be stagnant the remainder of the
quarter. The impress stat of quarter 1 was that the Bills offense net 1
total yard. This would not last long however. Before halftime we
would see 2 Buc rushing TD's (Gore and Palmer) and one from Ryan
Matthews of the Bills. Teams headed to the half with the Bucs on top
17-7. "We really felt good in the first half. Everything was
clicking. Our D was holding up and we were moving the ball pretty
well. Honestly, we felt we gave up points and left points on the field"
said Bucs line backer Gary Brackett. "We felt that we could score on
our drive to open the second half and that it would put the game away".
Fate saw this game different.
To open the second half the overly confident Bucs felt they could
trample the Bills. It is believed that Bill Belichick was spying on the
Bucs sideline and informed the Bills of the cockey smack talk. On the
opening kick of the half a unknown man in a white helmet took Johnnie
Lee Higgins to the woodshed. To this very minute Higgins is looking for
who to press assault charges on...he is also still looking for the
football. The scoop was scored by Demps from Buffalo. "I saw ball and
said 'mine...I get ball'" Demps said of his mysterious finding. "Is it
still Saturday" Higgins was heard saying as he left the stadium. All of
the sudden the Bucs lead was down to 3...which at one point they felt
would be 17. With the game tight the offense, which has gelled in the
past 2 weeks, became as calm as it has all season and Carson Palmer led
his team on drive after drive converting 27 passes and leading the team
to several 3rd down conversions.
Fast forward to the end of the game. Roughly 4 minutes left in the game
the Bucs were held 3 and out with the nose of the football to go. In a
hurry up mode Gore ran the ball and was stopped on his first attempt,
kept going, but was again stopped on his second attempt. Palmer later
explained "We thought that if we converted, we would win". Instead the
table was set for a Bills W. However, after going 3 and out the Bills
would settle for a FG and the tie.
To see the end of the game....look at the top of the write up.
The Bucs are now on their way to assist the United Way in tornado relief
in Joplin Missouri. This team building week will allow the team to
realize that it is just a game, but a freakin incredible game at that.
